Lovable
AI full-stack app builder that turns natural-language prompts into editable React web apps (UI, backend, auth, publish), with GitHub/GitLab sync for engineering handoff.
Lovable
1. Overview
Lovable (product site: lovable.dev; docs: docs.lovable.dev) is an AI full-stack development platform for building, iterating on, and deploying web applications from natural language. You describe what you want; Lovable generates a working app with frontend, backend, database, authentication, and integrations, backed by editable code (Welcome, FAQ).
Official positioning covers the full product lifecycle: early exploration and prototyping through publish and ongoing operation. Workspaces share a credit pool and projects; each project is one app with chat, live preview, code, and version history (Welcome). Docs claim you can build and publish a first app in about ten minutes of hands-on time (Quick start). Published apps get a *.lovable.app URL (custom domains on paid plans) with Lovable hosting and HTTPS (Publish, FAQ).
Stack (official): New projects created from 13 May 2026 default to TanStack Start with server-side rendering. Older projects use React + Vite (still supported; upgradable in place). Styling uses Tailwind. Backend options include Lovable Cloud (built-in database, auth, storage, edge functions, AI) and a native Supabase integration, plus third-party APIs and connectors (FAQ, TanStack upgrade).
For Demo and prototype, the practical pitch is: get a high-fidelity, code-backed, full-stack demo fast, share a live URL, then hand engineers a GitHub or GitLab repo (two-way sync) or a ZIP on paid plans. The honest caveats are React/web lock-in, credit burn on serious iteration, no import of existing repos into Lovable, and design-system fidelity that needs deliberate setup on paid plans.
Pricing (public, USD, as listed in docs; always re-check lovable.dev/pricing): Plans are priced by credits, not seats. Unlimited workspace members on all listed plans (Subscription plans).
| Plan | Public list (from docs) |
|---|---|
| Free | $0. Daily build credits: 5/day, capped at 30/month. Monthly Cloud grant: 20 credits. Monthly AI grant: 4 credits. |
| Pro | From $25/month (100 credits/month) on monthly billing; higher credit tiers and annual discounts listed in docs. |
| Business | From $50/month (100 credits/month) on monthly billing; higher tiers listed in docs. Governance extras (SSO, internal publish, Security center, and more). |
| Enterprise | Custom / volume-based. Contact sales. |
Git sync (GitHub and GitLab) is available on all plans. Full codebase ZIP download and in-editor code edit are paid-plan features (Subscription plans, Code mode). Exact credit cost per typical PM demo is unknown (usage varies by prompt and project size). Do not treat third-party credit-math blog posts as official benchmarks.
Affiliate status: joinable. Lovable publishes an official Affiliate partners programme (apply for approval; marketing claims “up to $100 for each first-time subscriber”). Separate Solution Partner and Expert tracks also exist on the partners site. Confirm current commission terms in the affiliate platform before relying on them in commercial content.
2. How it scores on the rubric
Numeric scores are omitted. There is not enough shared evidence to score this yet. Below is an evidence-linked discussion against each criterion.
Time-to-useful
Strong for shareable web demos. Official quick start targets first prompt to live lovable.app URL in about ten minutes, with no install or config (Quick start). Design guidance can show three visual directions before the full build, which can reduce early revision loops (Design guidance). Remixable templates are available on any plan (FAQ).
Caveats: Free tier is exploration-friendly but thin for heavy iteration (5 daily build credits, 30/month cap). Publishing from the Publish dialog is free, but chat-driven publish and ongoing Cloud/AI usage consume credits (Publish, Credits). Live site is a snapshot; later edits need Publish changes (Publish).
Not published: Lovable does not give a figure for how long a typical first demo takes, beyond an “about ten minutes” quick-start claim.
Fidelity
High interactive fidelity for full-stack web demos. Previews run the app live in the editor; you can test flows across phone, tablet, and desktop sizes before publish (Welcome). Output is real React code with Tailwind, not flat mockups. Backend, auth, storage, and connectors are first-class for demos that need login, data, or integrations (FAQ). Figma import paths (plugin, MCP, .fig upload) are documented.
Caveats: Lovable builds web apps, not React Native. Store-ready native binaries are outside the product (PWA or Capacitor wrapper paths are documented as external options) (Publish FAQ, FAQ). Complex product logic, data correctness, and security remain human-owned. Security scans run at publish but do not replace review (Publish).
Non-engineer usability
Explicitly designed for non-coders, with plan and ops caveats. FAQ states no coding experience is required (FAQ). Audience list includes founders, PMs, designers, marketers, students, and enterprises (Welcome). Preview toolbar edits, Plan mode vs Build mode, and conversational iteration reduce the need to touch files. Free plan code editor is read-only; paid plans unlock edit and ZIP download (Code mode).
Caveats for product managers: Credits, Cloud usage, secrets, RLS/security findings, Git sync, and branch protection still surface engineering concepts. Free and Pro cannot restrict website access (published apps are always link-public); internal publish needs Business or Enterprise (Publish). Treat “anyone can demo” as true; treat “anyone should own production without review” as false.
Design-system fidelity
Capable with setup; not automatic brand match on first prompt.
-
Default: Design guidance and Tailwind-based generation produce polished generic UI. Without a connected design system, expect Lovable’s default aesthetic rather than your brand system (Design guidance).
-
Design systems (paid plans): Dedicated design-system projects standardise React component libraries, tokens, schema, and guidelines across workspace projects. Connect one system per project; releases version and push updates; adherence checks catch raw colours and one-off components (Design systems).
-
Business design templates reuse approved project structure across a workspace.
-
npm-package wrap: Wrapping an existing npm package as a design system is Enterprise only (Design systems).
-
Limits: Design systems are React-native; Vue/Angular/Svelte are not supported as first-class today. Scaffolding quirks are documented as known limitations that setup verification often fixes.
Practical takeaway: Brand-accurate demos are achievable on paid plans with a released design system (or Business templates). They are a setup project, not a freebie of the first prompt.
Human gates
Real gates exist if you turn them on; defaults favour speed.
- Chat publish asks for approval unless the publish tool is set to auto-approve (Publish).
- Publish runs a Basic security scan; optional Deep scan. Findings do not block publish by default. Admins can enable Block publishing with critical findings (Publish).
- Enterprise: Who can publish externally can be restricted to admins/owners or owners only (Publish).
- Business/Enterprise: Internal publish and audience controls (workspace, groups, external viewers by email) (Publish).
- Git sync: When branch protection rejects a push, Lovable can push to a
lovable-syncbranch for human merge via normal PR review (GitHub sync). - Design-system attach/update is human-accepted from chat prompts (Design systems).
Read this as strong potential human gates on Business/Enterprise and with Git rules, not automatic safety on Free/Pro defaults.
Handoff
Among the stronger handoff stories in the demo-prototype category for React/web.
- Git sync to GitHub (github.com on all plans; GitHub Enterprise Cloud data residency and Enterprise Server on Enterprise) or GitLab (GitLab.com or self-managed) with two-way sync on the active branch (Git sync overview, GitHub).
- Connect creates a new private repo by default. You cannot import an existing GitHub/GitLab repo into Lovable (GitHub FAQ, FAQ).
- ZIP download of full codebase on paid plans (Code mode).
- Code ownership: creator owns projects and generated code per FAQ (subject to third-party model rights as noted on pricing/legal pages) (FAQ, Pricing).
- External deploy/hosting docs exist for leaving Lovable hosting.
Unknown / verify in-product: median engineering cleanup time after handoff, and how cleanly generated Cloud-backed apps migrate to arbitrary infra without following Lovable external-hosting guides.
3. FAQ
What is Lovable?
An AI-powered platform to create full-stack web apps from natural language: describe what you want, get editable code, preview live, publish to a URL, and optionally sync to Git (Welcome, FAQ).
What is the official domain?
lovable.dev for the product. Docs live at docs.lovable.dev. Published apps commonly use *.lovable.app. Trust/compliance materials are also referenced at trust.lovable.dev in official FAQ language (FAQ).
What stack does Lovable generate?
TanStack Start + SSR for new projects from 13 May 2026 (Enterprise default later: 22 June 2026 per upgrade docs). Older apps: React + Vite. Tailwind for styling. Backend via Lovable Cloud and/or Supabase, plus connectors/APIs (FAQ, TanStack upgrade).
Is it only a UI mockup tool?
No. Official docs position it as full-stack (UI, backend, auth, database, publish, Git). For demo-prototype use you can still stay UI-only by prompting “no login or database yet,” as the quick start recommends (Quick start).
Can a product manager use it without engineers?
Yes for demos, stakeholder alignment, and early validation. For production data, secrets, compliance, or long-lived product code, keep engineering review. Prefer Business/Enterprise publishing controls and Git required reviews as gates.
Can it match our company design system?
Yes, with setup on paid plans: create and release a Lovable design system, then attach it to projects. Wrapping an existing component library package is Enterprise. Without that, expect default Lovable/Tailwind aesthetics.
How do we hand off to engineering?
Connect the project to GitHub or GitLab (two-way sync), or on paid plans Download codebase as a ZIP. Engineers clone, review PRs, and deploy outside Lovable if needed. Remember: sync exports from Lovable; it does not import an existing repo.
What does it cost?
See lovable.dev/pricing and subscription docs. Public list from docs: Free; Pro from $25/month (100 credits); Business from $50/month (100 credits); Enterprise custom. Free includes 5 daily build credits (max 30/month). Taxes may apply. Exact credit burn per typical PM demo is unknown.
Does Lovable train on our prompts?
Per official training-data docs: from 9 September 2026, Free and Pro customer data may be used for model training unless you opt out in Account settings. Business and Enterprise workspace data is excluded by default. End-user data in your app database is not used for training. Confirm current Privacy Policy language before relying on this in contracts.
Does it support native mobile apps?
It builds responsive web apps. It does not generate React Native. Installable options documented: PWA, or Capacitor wrapping outside Lovable.
Is there an affiliate programme?
Yes (joinable). Official page: Affiliate partners. Application and approval required. Public marketing states commissions “up to $100” per first-time subscriber; treat exact rates, cookies, and payout rules as verify-in-platform rather than inventing figures in directory copy.
