Bolt (StackBlitz)
StackBlitz's AI full-stack builder at bolt.new that turns prompts into runnable websites, web apps, and Expo mobile projects in the browser, with Bolt Cloud hosting, GitHub sync, and ZIP export.
Bolt (StackBlitz)
1. Overview
Bolt (product site: bolt.new; help centre: support.bolt.new) is StackBlitz’s AI-powered builder for websites, web apps, mobile apps, and prototypes. You describe an idea in chat (or start from Figma, Google Stitch, GitHub, a team template, or a Lovable import); Bolt generates a working project in the browser, with live preview, iteration, and publish paths (Intro to Bolt, FAQ).
Bolt is developed by StackBlitz, the company behind WebContainers, which runs a Node.js development environment in the browser. That is why Bolt needs no local install and can install packages, run servers, and preview apps in-session (Intro to Bolt, Supported technologies, FAQ). Accounts and some settings link through StackBlitz. An open-source codebase for building similar agents lives at github.com/stackblitz/bolt.new; treat the hosted product docs as the source of truth for bolt.new features and limits.
Official audiences include product managers, entrepreneurs, marketers, agencies, students, and developers. Docs state no coding knowledge is required for prompting and chat-driven changes, while Code view and GitHub remain available for people who want control (Intro to Bolt).
Stack (official): JavaScript-based web technologies. Node.js backends and browser-native frontend frameworks. Bolt Cloud for databases, auth, hosting, and domains, with optional Supabase. Mobile via Expo. Integrations include GitHub, Stripe, Google SSO, Netlify, Figma, MCP, and more (Supported technologies, Intro to Bolt). PHP and Python backends are not compatible.
For Demo and prototype, the practical pitch is: get a high-fidelity, code-backed demo fast in the browser, share a bolt.host URL (or private publish on paid plans), then hand engineers a GitHub repo or ZIP. The honest caveats are token burn on large or heavily iterated projects, JavaScript/Node lock-in, custom design-system fidelity gated to Teams, and mobile store shipping that requires Expo/EAS work outside Bolt.
Pricing (public, USD, as listed on bolt.new/pricing; always re-check): Plans are priced by tokens (and for Teams, by member seats). Yearly billing is marketed as saving up to 28%.
| Plan | Public list (from pricing page) |
|---|---|
| Free | $0. 300K tokens/day, 1M tokens/month. Public and private projects. Bolt branding on websites. 10MB file upload. Website hosting with up to 333k web requests. Unlimited databases. |
| Pro | $25/month billed monthly. Starts at 10M tokens/month, no daily token limit. No Bolt branding. Private site sharing. 100MB uploads. Up to 1M web requests. Unused tokens roll over. Custom domains, SEO boosting, expanded database capacity, choice of database provider, AI image editing. |
| Teams | $30/month per member billed monthly. Everything in Pro, plus centralised billing, team access management, admin controls, organisation sharing, private NPM registries, design-system knowledge with per-package prompts. |
| Enterprise | Custom. Advanced security (SSO, audit logs), compliance support, dedicated support, SLAs, flexible procurement. |
Token details and rollover rules are documented in Tokens. Free tokens do not roll over. Paid unused tokens can remain valid for up to two months while a paid subscription stays active (pricing FAQ dates the rollover change from 1 July 2025). Exact token burn per typical PM demo is unknown (usage scales with project size because much of the cost is file-system sync to the model). Do not treat third-party token-math blog posts as official benchmarks.
Affiliate status: none. Official corporate docs state Bolt does not currently have affiliate or sponsorship programmes (Corporate and commercial). A separate Refer a friend programme exists (invitee discount and capped cash reward via Cello); that is not a joinable public affiliate catalogue (Referral programme).
2. How it scores on the rubric
Numeric scores are omitted. There is not enough shared evidence to score this yet. Below is an evidence-linked discussion against each criterion.
Time-to-useful
Strong for shareable web demos. The QuickStart targets roughly 10-15 minutes hands-on for a first app, with wait time of about five minutes for a first database-backed build in the walkthrough (QuickStart). No install is required in a supported browser (FAQ). Publish to a free bolt.host URL from the Publish menu does not consume tokens when you use the button (prompting Bolt to publish does) (Publish).
Caveats: The Free tier has 300K daily / 1M monthly caps that make serious iteration fragile; the QuickStart itself notes following along uses just under the daily Free limit. Larger projects use more tokens per message because Bolt syncs the file tree to the model. Published sites are snapshots; later edits need Update in Publish.
Not published: Bolt does not give a figure for how long a typical first demo takes, beyond the QuickStart timing.
Fidelity
High interactive fidelity for full-stack web demos. Previews run in WebContainers (Chromium) or as hosted previews (Safari). Output is real project code (frameworks that run on StackBlitz/WebContainers), not flat mockups. Bolt Cloud supplies databases, auth, user management, hosting, and domains for demos that need login and data. Visual Edits, Plan mode, Figma/Stitch import, and Design systems raise demo polish when configured.
Caveats: Backend languages outside JavaScript/Node are unsupported. Mobile is Expo-based: in-product Device Preview via Expo Go is documented, but store binaries require downloading code and using EAS, Apple/Google developer accounts, and external tooling (Expo). Complex product logic, data correctness, and security remain human-owned. Security audits (paid) help but do not replace review (Security).
Non-engineer usability
Explicitly positioned for non-coders, with token and ops caveats. Intro docs say no coding knowledge is required; PMs are a named audience for insight-to-prototype workflows. Chat, Plan mode, Select/visual edits, and automatic databases reduce the need to touch files. Code view edits do not consume tokens, which helps after Free daily limits.
Caveats for product managers: Tokens, hosting bandwidth, secrets, GitHub branching, Expo/EAS for mobile, and Safari Code-view read-only behaviour still surface engineering concepts. Free published sites show a Made in Bolt badge; custom domains and private publish features are paid-plan territory. Treat “anyone can demo” as true; treat “anyone should own production without review” as false.
Design-system fidelity
Capable with setup; custom systems need Teams.
- Default / pre-loaded: Bolt ships pre-loaded open-source design systems (examples named in docs: Chakra, Material UI, Shadcn) so you can explore building from real components rather than generic stand-ins (Design systems introduction).
- Custom design systems: Adding your own (component library, docs site, Storybook, GitHub, NPM, files) is available on paid Team plans. Generation typically takes 45-60 minutes depending on sources; teams can add or sync a combined total of 10 design systems per week (Add your design system).
- Teams pricing also lists design-system knowledge with per-package prompts (Pricing).
Practical takeaway: Brand-accurate demos are achievable on Teams with a generated design system and good sources (docs alone tend to yield a theme rather than reusable components). On Free/Pro without that setup, expect default or pre-loaded aesthetics, not automatic match to a private brand system.
Human gates
Real gates exist if you turn them on; defaults favour speed.
- Publish visibility: Public or private publish. Private sites limit access to team and invited viewers (paid capability on Pro as Share sites privately). Team admins can force Private only or Public only.
- Publish permissions: Only owners or co-owners can publish and manage visibility.
- Security: Paid plans can run a project security audit from Publish (button path does not use tokens). Database security checks exist on all plans.
- GitHub: Bolt auto-commits and can create branches; merging branches is done in GitHub, not in-app, which is the natural pull-request human-review gate.
- Teams: Integration controls (GitHub, Stripe, Supabase), deploy-provider defaults, external collaboration toggles, and member roles.
Read this as strong potential human gates on Teams/Enterprise and with GitHub review rules, not automatic safety on solo Free defaults.
Handoff
Among the stronger handoff stories in the demo-prototype category for JS/web.
- GitHub: Create a new private repo from a Bolt project, or import an existing repository. Auto commits, branch create/switch in Bolt, fetch from GitHub about every 30 seconds. Merge via GitHub.
- ZIP download: Export then Download to work locally in your own editor.
- Open in StackBlitz remains documented for some projects; docs note an April 2026 storage-format change that can remove that option for migrated projects (Code view remains).
- Hosting alternatives: Bolt Cloud hosting, Netlify integration, or download and host elsewhere.
- Ownership: Code you create with Bolt/StackBlitz is yours for legal purposes including commercial use. Confirm current Terms for edge cases.
Unknown / verify in-product: median engineering cleanup time after handoff, and how cleanly Bolt Cloud-backed apps migrate to arbitrary infra without following Bolt external-hosting guides.
3. FAQ
What is Bolt?
An AI builder from StackBlitz that turns natural-language prompts (and design/Git imports) into runnable websites, web apps, and Expo mobile projects in the browser, with optional Bolt Cloud backend, hosting, GitHub sync, and ZIP export.
What is the official domain?
bolt.new for the product. Docs/help live at support.bolt.new. Published apps commonly use *.bolt.host. StackBlitz (stackblitz.com) is the parent company and account/IDE companion, not a separate Bolt product brand.
Is Bolt the same as StackBlitz?
Related but not the same product. Bolt is the AI builder. StackBlitz is the company (and classic online IDE) behind WebContainers. Accounts link; some account actions happen on StackBlitz.
What stack does Bolt generate?
JavaScript / Node.js web stacks that run in WebContainers (if it runs on StackBlitz, it generally runs on Bolt). Mobile via Expo. Databases via Bolt Cloud or Supabase. Not PHP or Python backends.
Is it only a UI mockup tool?
No. Official docs position full-stack apps (UI, database, auth, hosting, integrations). For demo-prototype use you can still stay UI-light by prompting without auth or database features.
Can a product manager use it without engineers?
Yes for demos, stakeholder alignment, and early validation. For production data, secrets, compliance, or long-lived product code, keep engineering review. Prefer private publish, Teams visibility controls, security audits, and GitHub required reviews as gates.
Can it match our company design system?
Yes, with setup on a paid Team plan: import sources (GitHub, NPM, Storybook, docs, files) and generate a Storybook-backed system in Bolt. Pre-loaded systems (for example Shadcn, MUI, Chakra) help without custom import. Without that, expect default/pre-loaded aesthetics.
How do we hand off to engineering?
Connect GitHub (create or import), review branches on GitHub, or Export > Download a ZIP and run locally. Engineers can continue in Cursor, VS Code, or StackBlitz. For mobile store builds, follow Expo/EAS steps outside Bolt.
What does it cost?
See bolt.new/pricing. Public list: Free; Pro $25/month; Teams $30/month per member; Enterprise custom. Free includes 300K tokens/day and 1M/month. Exact token burn per typical PM demo is unknown. Taxes may apply.
Does Bolt train on our prompts?
Unknown from Help Centre pages fetched. Confirm current StackBlitz/Bolt Privacy Policy and Enterprise data-governance terms before relying on training claims in contracts. Enterprise marketing lists data governance and retention as customisable.
Does it support native mobile apps?
Bolt builds Expo-compatible mobile projects. You can preview with Expo Go. Publishing to TestFlight/App Store/Play requires downloading code, EAS CLI, and platform developer accounts. Do not treat “build a mobile app in Bolt” as one-click signed binaries inside the chat UI alone.
Is there an affiliate programme?
No (official). Corporate docs: Bolt does not currently have affiliate or sponsorship programmes. A Refer a friend reward programme exists separately; no affiliate programme is joined.
